The Dog and Pony Show

So guess what I have been doing?

Training Diesel for his first dog show!  LOL  As if I don't have enough to do right?  Here's the story...

Mark (my DH) wants a dog for his 30th birthday.  He's always wanted a Lab.  Really?  That big dog in the house?  Can't we get something smaller?  Nope.  A Lab is the right dog for us.  Hmmmmm, ok then - you are so supportive of all of my crazy plans so a Lab it is.  What color?  He says yellow.  I say black.  He says, DONE!

I knew that this dog needed to be integrated well into our family, to be well trained so that he could travel and just be part of our daily lives without having to "worry" about him and what he was doing.  Training was key.  It became obvious quickly that of course, *I* am the one with him the vast majority of the time, as I work from home.

Those who know me well will chuckle at this, but you all may not know that I don't do anything without a desirable purpose or outcome at the end.  I have to have something to work towards or....BORING.  No thanks.  Accomplishment motivates me.

The dog show...I am getting there, I promise.

I mention to my breeder that The Dies and I need something to do.  Something to work towards.  Most Lab sports can not be started until they are around 18 months old so that you don't damage those growing bones and joints - big dogs that grow fast need a little extra care with exercise early on.  Hmmmm.  Is he good enough to show?  Would we just be embarrassing ourselves?  He was sold as a pet, not a show prospect.  Shelley, the breeder assures me once she sees him again at 7 months old that we certainly would not be embarrassing ourselves!  Cool.  Something to do.

Next, onto obedience classes.  I had been doing lots of things at home and feeling my way, but we needed some help if we wanted to be in a show ring in 6 weeks.  Loose lead walking being the big one.  Lucky for me, the President of the BC Lab Club lives just a few minutes away and she holds classes - bonus!

Fast forward to this past weekend. We entered our first All Breed Show!  There were lots of Labs entered but it turned out that none of them were in our class.  :(  The classes ended up being the perfect introduction for us to the show ring!  We came home with all sorts of ribbons which has become the joke of the weekend for my DH.  I would arrive home after the class to the following: Did you win?  Why, yes!  Good for you!  Were you the only dog again?  YEP!!  *giggles*  We even won Winners Dog.  No points though of course, you actually have to compete against other animals to get points.  Well dang.

The weekend was perfect because it gave me the experience to really know what I need to work on in the handling department and what he needs to work on to show himself off a little better.  We did get some very encouraging feedback from a judge who has been judging for 40 years.  He was willing to spend some time with me after my class to critique Diesel and give me some pointers too.  His advice and thoughts were invaluable in terms of giving me encouragement to go forward.  You just never know when you really might impact someone's life with your knowledge.  If someone asks you a question and is genuinely *trying* to improve, spend time with them.  I do this all the time at stamping demos and I have seen that it really does impact people if you are willing to share a bit of a piece of yourself.  Those 20 minutes he chatted with me were easily worth all of the money I spent this weekend 10 fold.

Now, I did take a few pictures of our breeder showing her Fergie, who is preggers.  :)  So excited to see some new puppies soon.  I forgot to ask anyone to snap a picture of us though.  ;)

I started this post talking about horses too.  I showed Quarter Horses for 13 years which is why showing Diesel was not such a big leap for me.  I managed to find two OLD pictures of my first horse Jane and I.  Her registered name was Tivio Cat Balou which I always thought was so pretty.  After I finished up the classes this weekend I found myself reminiscing about my days showing horses and even called my old trainer just to catch up.  Amazing how strongly our memories from childhood remain clear isn't it?

In this first photo I am around eleven years old, we had just placed 2nd in a very large English Showmanship class - I think there were over 25 entries:

In this photo I am 13, same horse.  It was taken at my grandparent's farm, which is now owned by my parents.

Finally, this is me at 15 with Romeo (Ebony San Pep) who was a half brother to my Jane:

And there you have it.  The Dog and Pony Show.  My dear friend Jules keeps asking me about "The Dog and Pony Show" as she has dubbed it!  She's a hoot, that Jules.

Are you still with me after that rambling?  Ha!  Thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with me.  *mwah*

Paper Pastimes

Hi all!

Are you headed to Calgary this weekend?  Well then you had better come see me!  :-)

On the road..

I will arrive at my super special secret location today!  Check back for pictures tonight.  ;)

The CHA Vortex

..it sucked me in!

People close to me know that I endeavor to maintain an appropriate balance between my family and work life.  There are however, two times a year where no matter how much planning you do, no matter how far you try to work ahead, there is an event called CHA that takes over for a few weeks.

CHA (The world's wholesale craft fair) was a huge success for Cornish Heritage Farms.  The business "stuff" that goes on at the show is always very encouraging, but this show was particularly exciting for me as I was able to meet Richard and Liz, who have been my employers for almost the past 2 years in person for the first time.  We have spent a ridiculous amount of time together on the phone - thank goodness for $25/month flat rate long distance!  My husband takes great joy in announcing to me at the end of each month just how many thousand minutes I have been on the phone for work!  But I digress...

As usual, I have hardly any photos to show you.  Pathetic.  Once again, I just seemed to be going non-stop from 6:15am to 11pm every night and just never thought to have my camera with me.  So here in no specific order, are my photos of Winter CHA 2008.  If you took pictures of me or with me, please please let me know okay?!  ;-)

Finally, breakfast in bed.  I had two of the best roomies a girl could have.  We could not seem to find a hot breakfast with any semblance of protein in it for the first few days of the show.  Keri got up really early one morning, went to Denny's and ordered breakfast to go.  It was nothing short of AMAZING!  Keri is a real caretaker and I appreciated her thoughtfulness more than a few times throughout the week.

More to share tomorrow.  I don't like to comment on the show for a week or two.  I need time to gel and figure out what I saw and what it might mean.  But I have an epic post brewing on that subject!

For you CHF fans, there is more rubber than you can shake a stick at coming your way soon.  Sigh, I love brand new red rubber more than ever...*dreamy smile*

Love this woman...

Hands down, one of my most favoritist people of all time...

We had so much fun! :^)

7 Pictures

I took 7 pictures at CHA.  Is that not the most pathetic thing you have ever heard?  I have many friends who are going to be kind to me and send me pics they took.  *mwah* to them all!  In the meantime, here are 3 of the 7 that turned out!

This is the super cute Julie Brooks (JJBrooks on Splitcoast), don't you just want to eat her up?  She has opened an online store called Doodlie Doo with her (cousin? - sorry I can't remember the connection girlie) April!  They have lots of fun goodies including my new MUST-HAVE organization tool - Clip It Up.  I am going to do a big post about the Clip It Up tomorrow.

And this pretty lady with a huge, beautiful smile is Nadine - CHA Sales Manager Extraordinaire.  She is crazy busy leading up to CHA, but when the show starts and everyone is in place, she is happy girl!  I recently graduated from Ranger University with this chica.  :)

And last but certainly not least, here is Robin Beam demonstrating Perfect Pearls.  She is the Director of Education for Ranger Industries and I swear, she is one of the reasons that Ranger is so successful!  She is phenomenally talented and I want to be just like her when I grow up.  LOL

I am a busy little bee these days and hope to share some of what I have been up too soon!  Do you find that you think summer will give you all sorts of extra time to get things done and then you end up getting less done than ever?  I have been spending wonderful time with my little family and I would not trade it for anything.  Hugs to you all!

We All Won!

Take a look at Vicki Chrisman's blog!  Scroll down a few pictures to see the loot we won!  It was funny that the three of us came together, were sitting together and then all won a door prize.  :^)

A Weary Traveller Returns

Hi all!  I have missed you!  :D  I arrived home at 2am last night (Monday) and spent the day with my family and catching up on some sleep.

The highlight of the show this year was friends and relationships.  Spending time with other people who are passionate about stamping and paper craft is such a blessing for me.

I do have some exciting things to share with you, but I must warn you - ith the exception of Basic Grey, I didn't visit many large booths.  It seemed to be the little guys that drew me in this time.

I will try to share one thing a day for the next week so stay tuned!

Without question, the product that I am most excited about is Grunge Board by Tim Holtz and I will talk about that tomorrow!

CHA Summer, Chicago

I can't believe 6 months have passed since I went to Anaheim!  Wow, life just streams on by us doesn't it?

I have to say, as much fun as it is to see all of the new goodies manufacturers have in store for us, the best part of these events is seeing my dear friends.  Ellen and I have Ms. Trudee and Ms. Michelle bunking with us this time...can you say, too much fun?!

It is also going to be such a pleasure to meet many, many talented stampers and paper crafters that I have gotten to know through design work over the past 6 months.  It's going to be hard for my head to stop spinning!

I am going to leave you tonight with a sneak peak of the new Crafty Secrets clear stamp sets that will be released at the show.  Sandy (owner) and Cindy (graphic artist) have truly come so far in what they have learned to bring you these fabulously detailed clear art stamps.  Enjoy, and I will speak to you from the show!

The Big One

Well, not the biggest I have caught at my favorite lake, but still BIG!  :D  I absolutely love fishing as I said yesterday.  My favorite time is early in the morning, when the water is calm and quiet, with an electric motor on the boat.  I like to take a coffee and my breakfast with me and let the morning sun warm my face.  Catching a fish is almost a bonus at that point!

Here is a picture of the lake at my favorite time of day:

Lake_small_3

And here is one of my fish:

Lisa_at_canim

This Lake Trout (aka "Laker") weighed in at around 10lbs.  The heaviest Laker I caught from this lake was 21lbs when I was 6 months pregnant - man was I tired after that fight!

My hubs and other fishing buddies like the Rainbow Trout and Kokanees that swim nearer to the surface, but I like a good fight, even if it means I get fewer fish in the boat.  *wink*
